It was regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), one of the nation's seven major accrediting bodies. The university was named in honor of Stanley H. Kaplan,[3] who founded Kaplan Test Prep.[4] In 2017, Indiana's Purdue University announced the acquisition of Kaplan University with the aim of changing it into a nonprofit online institution known as Purdue University Global.[5][6][7] The acquisition was completed in March 2018.[8]
